Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Venice is a unique artistic achievement. The city is built on 118 small islands and seems to float on the waters of the lagoon. This unforgettable landscape inspired artists such as Canaletto, Guardi and Turner. Venice has one of the highest concentrations of masterpieces in the world: from Torcello’s Cathedral to the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
Piazza San Marco was constructed in the 9th century as a part of the Doge's Palace. The square is surrounded by ornate buildings and the Bell Tower. It is always filled with people, pigeons and several times a year, water from the lagoon, which floods the square.
St Mark's Basilica is one of the best examples of Byzantine architecture in the world. Known for its opulent design and gilded interior mosaics, it earned the nickname Chiesa d'Oro, meaning "Church of Gold". Its design is a unique mixture of eastern and western architectural styles.
Venice's famous Bridge of Sighs Ponte dei Sospiri was built in the 17th century to connect the Old Prison in the Doge's Palace to the New Prison. Legend has it that prisoners would ‘sigh’ as they crossed the bridge, catching one final glimpse of the outside world.
Venetian water taxis, known has vaporetto are the most efficient mode of transport, aside from walking. Sit up the front and prepare to take lots of photos as you cruise Venice’s famous canals.
